Canada’s Biometrics Expansion Project Agenda

16th May, 2018, Nassau, Bahamas: As of 31st July, 2018, the Government of Canada will commence collecting biometrics from foreign nationals entering Canada as a part of its immigration program. Nationals from European, Middle Eastern, and African countries will be the first to be required to give biometrics after which nationals from remaining countries will be required commencing December, 2018.

The following categories of foreign nationals will be required to give biometrics (at a cost of CAD $85):

  • Applying for a visitor’s visa;
  • Applying for a work permit or study permit, (excluding U.S. nationals);
  • Applying for permanent residence; and
  • Claiming refugee or asylum status.

Persons who will be exempt from biometrics collections include the below:

  • Persons under 14 years old and over 79 years old;
  • Visa exempt nationals coming to Canada as tourists who hold a valid ETA;
  • Cabinet ministers and accredited diplomats of other countries and the United Nations, coming to Canada on official business; and
  • Heads of State and Heads of Government.
