Ambassador Sheila Carey
Sheila Carey resumed the post of Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration in June 2015. Previous to that appointment, Ms. Carey served as Chargé d’Affaires in Beijing from 2012 to March 2015.
In June, 2007, Ms. Carey was appointed Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, having previously served since 2002 as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and the Ministry of Financial Services and Investments.
Ms. Carey is a career Foreign Service Officer with extensive experience both in The Bahamas and overseas. She has served at The Bahamas Consulate in Miami, Florida, The Bahamas High Commission in Ottawa, Canada, and at The Bahamas Embassy in Washington, DC where she served concurrently as Alternate Representative to the Organization of American States. Her most recent overseas post was at the Embassy of The Bahamas in Beijing, China.
Ms. Carey joined the then Ministry of External Affairs in September 1978. Ms. Carey served in various divisions in the Ministry including the CARICOM, political and economic divisions of the Ministry and as head of the consular section.
Ms. Carey has represented The Bahamas at a number of bilateral and international conferences and meetings, including several sessions of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States and the United Nations General Assembly.
Ms. Carey received her early education in The Bahamas and Jamaica. She has a degree in International Relations from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada and in Economics from Florida International University in Miami, Florida.
