9th Inter-American Meeting of Ministers of Education

9th Inter-American Meeting of Ministers of Education,  Nassau, New Providence, on February 9-10th, 2017

The 9th Inter-American Meeting of Ministers of Education, will be hosted in Nassau, New Providence, The Bahamas on February 9 -10th, 2017, at the Atlantis Hotel.  The Ministerial will be chaired by the Honourable Jerome Fitzgerald, Minister of Education, Science and Technology. Under the theme “The Inter-American Education Agenda (IEA): Building alliances and advancing towards the Sustainable Development Goals”, the Meeting will provide a space for hemispheric debate on the most pressing education issues in the region: quality, inclusive and education; teacher training and professional development and comprehensive early childhood care.

The Ministerial will prove historic as it will also provide the opportunity to approve the first Inter-American Education Agenda (IEA) , which defines a series of actions to advance the aforementioned issues. The IEA is a document of the highest relevance for education in the region as it captures hemispheric collective commitment for inter-American cooperation as well as coordination among OAS Member States and with other stakeholders to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education is available to all, simultaneously providing life-long learning opportunities .

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is also organizing a Good Practices and Trade Exhibition in the margins of the Education Ministerial where Member States will have the opportunity to showcase their best practices and intergovernmental and private organizations will have the opportunity to showcase the services they provide in the field of education and ways in which they can contribute to the implementation of the Inter- American Education Agenda (IEA).

At the 8th Meeting of Ministers of Education in Panama in 2015, The Bahamas was selected to host the upcoming Ministerial and in 2016 The Bahamas was elected as Chair of the Executive of the Inter-American Committee on Education (CIE) for the 2016-2018 term. The CIE is composed of representatives designated by the highest national education authorities of Member States and its work is to coordinate the implementation of inter-American ministerial dialogue on education in order to follow-up on the mandates of the Summits of the Americas and the agreements entered into at the Meetings of Ministers of Education, to identify multilateral initiatives, and to contribute to the execution of OAS policies in the area of partnership for educational development.
