Bahamas Observes United Nations Day

The Commonwealth of The Bahamas joins the international community in the observance of the 73rd Anniversary of the United Nations Charter, first celebrated 24th October, 1945.

The work of the United Nations over the last seven decades serves as a light of hope for humanity. The United Nations was founded with the bold ambition to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.  Today, the organization continues to support member states in this lofty ideal, while yet tackling new threats to peace and security such as climate change and global warming.  The United Nations remains a beacon for human rights and gender equality, peace and security, sustainable development and the fight against terrorism.

In 1973, The Bahamas became a member of the United Nations body.  The Bahamas is an active member of the United Nations and its specialized bodies such as the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the World Health Organization and its regional subsidiary,  the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO),  to which The Hon. Dr. Duane Sands, Minister of Health was recently elected President of the 56th President Director Council of Pan American Health Organization and the United Nations Education Scientific Cultural Organization (UNESCO).  The Bahamas was recently elected to serve as a member of the Human Rights Council, for the period 2019 – 2021.

The Bahamas in celebrating the 73rd Anniversary of the United Nations, reaffirms its support for the organization.
