Minister the Hon. Frederick Mitchell Paid Courtesy call by South Korea Ambassador to CARICOM

 

The Hon. Frederick A. Mitchell, Minister of Foreign Affairs met with His Excellency Mr. Youngjoon Jo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), on 23rd November, 2023, in Nassau. The Parties discussed enhancing bilateral relations and Korea-Bahamas collaboration, including expanding scholarship opportunities, telecommunications technical assistance, and renewable energies. 

Ambassador Youngjoon extended congratulations to The Bahamas on its 50th independence anniversary and expressed Korea’s desire for deeper relations, including high-level exchanges. The Ambassador also made reference to his country’s bid to host the World Expo in 2030. In addition to South Korea, Italy, and Saudi Arabia are also vying to host the event. 

Topics such as education, renewable energy, and technical assistance were also discussed in detail and Minister Mitchell advocated for more educational opportunities to be granted to Bahamian students seeking to study in South Korea. 

Also in attendance at the meeting were Ms. Jerusa Ali, Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Service Officers: Mr Antonio Butler Jr, Ms. R. Aruba Ferguson, and Ms. Karen Symonette.
