New Chinese Ambassador-Designate to The Bahamas Pays Courtesy Call at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nassau, New Providence, The Bahamas – On 9 July 2024, Her Excellency (H.E.) YAN Jiarong, Ambassador-designate of the People’s Republic of China to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas paid a courtesy call at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and presented the copie d’usage of her Letters of Credence.

The courtesy call also included discussions on further strengthening bilateral ties between China and The Bahamas, while also highlighting mutual areas of interest for further consideration.

Some of the topics discussed included pending requests for support at the United Nations level; technical assistance trainings and scholarships; concluded and pending Agreements and Memoranda of Understandings (MOUs) relative to medical equipment, building new hospital facilities, military assistance, trade and economic cooperation, and educational cooperation.

The Bahamas’ side also reiterated its endorsement of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Global Development Initiative (GDI), which was conveyed to the Chinese authorities via diplomatic channels in March (2024), and confirmed its continued commitment to the cause to ensure that the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are met.

Both sides conveyed the assurances of continued cooperation on ensuring that the voices of developing states are adequately represented at the UN level, for equitable representation.

Those present at the courtesy call included the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Ambassador Jerusa Ali; Heads of Bureaus at MOFA and staff; along with diplomatic staff from the Chinese Embassy in Nassau.
