Regional Director for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Pays a Courtesy Call on the Foreign Ministry Ahead of Two-Day Workshop

The Director of the Division for Latin America and the Caribbean Department of Technical Cooperation for the IAEA Luis Carolos Longoria Gandara met with Director General Jerusa Ali, Deputy Director General Keva Bain and Ms. Danielle Smith of the Multilateral and Political Affairs Bureau.

The Bahamas is currently the recipient of eleven (11) IAEA projects focusing on agriculture, radiation medicine, water resource management, insect sterilization, strengthening legal frameworks, nuclear technology, climate change adaptation, strengthening laboratory capacity and others. The Bahamas has also benefitted from six (6) IAEA regional projects. The IAEA places strong emphasis on providing support for the marine environment and showed particular interest on supporting The Bahamas as a Small Island Developing State and a Caribbean country. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Fredrick Mitchell, visited the IAEA laboratories in Monaco, Vienna, where the IAEA has the UN’s only Marine Environment Laboratory, “Marine Environmental Studies Laboratory”.

Ambassador-at-Large Ron Pinder and National Coordinator/ Head of the Multilateral and Political Affairs Bureau, have been working closely with the IAEA on a three-day high-level workshop to be held this week in conjunction with the United States Department of Energy (DOE), the United States National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), and the U. S. Department of State (DOS) entitled ” Beyond Weapons: The Peaceful Application of Nuclear and Chemical Science for Safety, Security & Sustainable Development
