The Maritime and Ocean Affairs Bureau Participated in the Caribbean Global Gateway Conference on Sargassum

Ms. Karen Rolle of the Maritime and Ocean Affairs Bureau attended the The 2nd European Union – Caribbean Global Gateway Conference on Sargassum in Grenada on October 1-2, 2024.

This High-Level Forum was organized by the European Union (EU) in partnership with the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), under the auspices of the Honourable Dickon Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada.  Under the theme, Turning the Tide: Sustainable Practices and Economic Opportunities for Sargassum in the Caribbean Basinthe two-day conference brought together governments, policymakers, regional organizations, industry, experts, academia, stakeholders, and financing institutions from the Caribbean, Latin America and the European Union.

The conference attracted over 400 participants aiming to address the socio-economic and environmental impacts of Sargassum.

The initiative aims to stimulate political discussion regarding  the urgent issue of sargassum seaweed invading the Caribbean, address predictability and forecasting of sargassum supply, stimulate research and innovation, foster public-private partnerships, and determine actions for collecting sargassum before it reaches the shores to mitigate logistics challenges.
