The Bahamas Reaffirms Commitment to Resilience and Sustainability at CHOGM 2024
As the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) commences under the theme “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Commonwealth,” The Bahamas, represented by Prime Minister the Hon. Philip Davis, KC, and Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon. Frederick Mitchell, reaffirms its unwavering commitment to fostering resilient societies, strengthening democratic institutions, and promoting sustainable economies across the Commonwealth.
The Bahamas will prioritise key issues such as gender equality and youth development, with a particular focus on women’s economic empowerment and the protection of vulnerable groups. The delegation will advocate for inclusive climate finance mechanisms to support nations most affected by climate change. Additionally, enhancing health and education systems through the integration of digital solutions to improve access and equity remains a priority.
A key focus will be on the pressing global challenges facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Bahamas champions initiatives such as the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI), which assesses the unique vulnerabilities of SIDS to ensure climate finance aligns with their specific needs. Prime Minister Davis will also address the necessity of reparations for historical injustices, including the legacy of slavery and colonialism, as essential to promoting global equity and justice.
Through active engagement with Commonwealth nations, The Bahamas will collaborate to tackle shared challenges, including climate action, economic resilience, and social equity, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of a resilient and sustainable future.
