A Statement on the State of Emergency in Trinidad and Tobago
6th January 2025
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken note of the State of Emergency (SoE) declared by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago on December 30, 2024, in response to rising criminal violence.
The SoE aims to combat crime, particularly related to gang violence involving illegal firearms, following a surge in killings. While no curfews or restrictions on public gatherings are currently in place, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) will have enhanced powers to search individuals and premises without warrants if there is reasonable suspicion of criminal activity. The Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) will support the police and have equivalent powers during the SoE, lasting until 30th March 2025. The Government of Trinidad and Tobago will monitor the situation closely, and the public is advised to be cautious, cooperate with authorities, and stay informed through official channels.
