Statement by Foreign Affairs Minister Frederick Mitchell on the Passing of Former President Festus Mogae
For Immediate Release – 9th May 2026.
On behalf of Prime Minister Philip Davis, the Foreign Ministry, and the people of The Bahamas, I extend heartfelt condolences to the government and people of The Republic of Botswana on the passing of former President Festus Mogae.
He was a friend of The Bahamas and proved to be committed to strengthening meaningful ties between Botswana and our nation. President Mogae made a state visit to The Bahamas in 2000, and Prime Minister Davis and I were able to meet with him during our official visit to Botswana in 2024.
He led with distinction and served his country with marked dedication. President Festus Mogae will be long remembered as a humble statesman who contributed much to the deepening of democracy in the Republic of Botswana.
