Press Statement From The Ministry of Foreign Affairs On The Death of Legendary Calypso Artist, Slinger Francisco aka The Mighty Sparrow

The Bahamas Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of the government and people of The Bahamas extends condolences to the governments of Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago on the death of legendary Caribbean calypso artist and entertainer, Slinger Francisco aka The Mighty Sparrow. He was born in Grenada. Trinidad and Tobago was his adopted home.

Sparrow’s musical hits included – Jean and Dinah, Who killed the Sparrow, Play mass, There was a man in the bedroom, and Good morning Mr. Walker. He was arguably the greatest calypso artist of all-time, with the superior number of Road march champion titles to prove it.

Dr. Slinger “Sparrow” Francisco was bestowed with the Order of Caricom Community in 2001, recognizing his lyrical brilliance, decades-long musical career, invaluable contributions, and revered role in helping to take the distinct calypso genre sound to the world.

The Mighty Sparrow was a friend of The Bahamas. He made countless visits and delivered memorable performances. Sparrow shared a special Caribbean bond with the late businessman, Eugene Edwards of Freeport, Grand Bahama, who brought him to the Bahamas often to entertain.

He will be missed by his large Bahamian fan base and no doubt by followers globally.
