BAHAMIAN-HAITIAN BILATERAL RELATIONS REMAIN STRONG
21st March 2025 — Port-au-Prince, Haïti
The Bahamas Embassy has continued its diplomatic efforts through active engagement with Haitian leaders and stakeholders during the first quarter of 2025. As CARICOM’s only Embassy in Haiti and under Chargé d’Affaires Commander Julian Smith, the Embassy has focused on greater co-operation toward shared goals through outreach to public and private sector representatives.
This outreach began on 21 January 2025 with a meeting with Reverend Father Claude Eric Andriamirado of the Holy See, to discuss community initiatives and regional collaboration between faith-based organisations. Commander Smith has maintained strong on-the-ground connections, participating in various local religious events throughout the quarter
On 3 and 4 February, productive discussions with Ministers James Monazard (Commerce and Industry) and Vernet Joseph (Agriculture) explored potential trade partnerships and agri-business opportunities.
Meetings on 17 and 18 February with Cap-Haïtien’s Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Patrick Almonor focused on maritime cooperation, tackling dishonest dealings, and tourism capacity building. Both sides expressed interest in streamlining visa processes and enhancing commercial ties.
A highlight of the quarter was The Bahamas’ participation in the International Women’s Rights Day event on 8 March at Hotel Karibe, celebrating the achievements of Haitian women and initiatives promoting gender equality—underscoring shared social priorities.
Foreign Minister Jean Harvel Victor Jean-Baptiste acknowledged The Bahamas’ constructive role in regional diplomacy. Commander Smith emphasised that: “the Embassy’s work this quarter establishes a foundation for more tangible deliverables as part of The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ commitment to meaningful diplomatic engagement with neighbouring Haiti.”
