16 February 2024

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to announce the appointment of Chavano “Buddy” Hield as Ambassador at Large for Sports and Cultural Advancement.

Hield, a native of Eight Mile Rock, Grand Bahama, had a standout college career at the University of Oklahoma, where he was named Wooden and Naismith Player of the Year in 2016 before embarking on an NBA career that would make him one of the most visible Bahamian faces within The Bahamas and Internationally.

Mr Hield has represented The Bahamas well internationally, promoting the Bahamian Culture and Interest at every juncture. As one of the most influential figures amongst our youth, Mr Hield’s appointment will aid well in encouraging our youth in the benefits of leading a positive life regardless of their background.

Foreign Minister, the Hon Frederick A. Mitchell M.P., welcomes Mr Hield to the diplomatic office as the Davis Administration encourages the next generations of Bahamians to lead a positive life.

Foreign Minister Mitchell noted that Mr. Hield’s public platform aligns with the Davis Administration’s goal of striving for excellence. Mr Hield’s philanthropic efforts within the Bahamian community, engaging in youth educational and sports initiatives through his nonprofit Buddy Hield Foundation, are the exact social programs required to break the trend of our young joining gangs and encouraging them to rise above their adversities.

Mr Hield was presented with his letters of credentials by the Honourable Philip E. Davis K.C. M.P., Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, at the Office of the Prime Minister.

Congratulations are extended to His Excellency Chavano Hield.
