The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Participates in CTI Regional Event

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs participated in a Regional Event hosted by The Convention Against Torture Initiative (CTI) in partnership with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) in Nassau, The Bahamas from Tuesday 10th to Thursday 12th December 2024.

The Regional Event was split into two segments. The first segment held on the 10th of December commemorated the 40th Anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention against Torture as well as the United Nations Human Rights Day.

Senator the Honourable Barry Griffin brought opening remarks reaffirming The Bahamas’ steadfast dedication to the promotion and protection of human rights as a CTI Core State and that we stand ready to deepen our engagement, champion UNCAT’s principles, and work collaboratively with regional and international partners

The second segment held on the 11th and 12th of December aimed to provide capacity building and a platform for experience sharing amongst law enforcement officials from the Caribbean region from approximately seven States.

The Caribbean region, with its strong tradition to promote and protect human rights and its foundations of good governance, has made significant strides over the years to ensure the prevention and prohibition of torture and ill-treatment.

The Bahamas joined the Convention against Torture Initiative (CTI) as its 7th leading Core State, further solidifying the country and the region’s commitment to a torture-free future, and amplifying the region’s voice and perspectives into international strategies.
