Statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs on the Events in Ecuador

6 March 2024

The Bahamas affirms our adherence to the general principles of international law in the conduct of relations between states. We reject any actions taken by states that violate the principles of international law. We have rules that regulate the protection, respect and inviolability of the premises of diplomatic missions and consular offices, which have been codified in Article 22 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 18 April 1961.

We believe that inappropriate actions have been taken by the Republic of Ecuador, which have led to the violation of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Quito. We encourage both states to enter into dialogue to resolve their differences. We are a region of peace and as Chair of the Permanent Council, we stand ready to ensure that these issues are discussed. I am in contact with Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alicia Barcena as well as the Mexican Ambassador to The Bahamas Juan Jose Gonzales.
