Happy International Women’s Day 2017

8 March 2017

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration takes this opportunity to join millions around the world in the celebration of International Women’s Day, the theme of which is “Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030”.

The world of work is changing, with significant implications for women. On International Women’s Day, UN Women has called on all actors to Step It Up for Gender Equality so that the world of work works for all women.

In The Bahamas, there are many women who have worked tirelessly to build stronger families, stronger communities and a stronger Nation; we must remember to celebrate them.  Women such as Eugenia Lockhart, Sarah Sands, Mabel Walker, Doris Johnson, Emily Purkiss and June Stevenson paved the way for women’s rights in The Bahamas.

Today we honor those founders and every female around the world on this special Day of Women. Additionally, today in The Bahamas a number of activities will take place to commemorate this important observance:

Wednesday, 8th March 2017 at 1:00 p.m.- Outside of House of Assembly, Parliament Square, to sign our wall/ mural (Open to the Public)

Wednesday,8th March 2017 at 6:00 p.m.– 8:00 p.m.- Choices Restaurant, Closing Ceremony and Celebratory Reception for our Women in Leadership and Decision Making Course

The Bahamas, through its representatives at the United Nations and other international organizations, continue to support the advancement women throughout the world.
