SIR SIDNEY POITIER ESSAY AWARDS CEREMONY
NASSAU, BAHAMAS
As a part of the march to the 50th anniversary of Majority Rule, seven (7) Sir Sidney Poitier’s films were shown on ZNS channel 13 during the week of February 14th, 2016. The broadcasting of these films also coincided with Sir Sidney Poitier’s 89th birthday, which was on 20 February.
To commemorate this occasion, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration (MOFA) along with The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) invited all students from the public high schools to participate in The Sir Sidney Poitier Essay Competition. Students were required to view the films and write a short essay on Sir Sidney’s life and his impact on The Bahamas.
High school students from across the country submitted their essays and a team of judges from MOEST and MOFA selected five (5) winners. The winners will receive their awards at The Sir Sidney Poitier Essay Awards Ceremony which is scheduled to be held on Monday 20th June 2016 at 10 o’clock in the morning at The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ministry of Youth’s Conference Room, Thompson Boulevard.
The ceremony will be attended by The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, The Hon. Frederick Mitchell, The Minister of Education, Science and Technology, The Hon. Jerome Fitzgerald, Senior Government Officials from both ministries, parents, teachers and students.
