Minister the Hon. Frederick A. Mitchell’s Statement in Parliament on The Bahamas’ UN Security Council Bid
House of Assembly, Nassau, New Providence, The Bahamas. 18th September 2024.
Today marks 51 years as a member of the United Nations. Our flag was raised in the presence of Rt Hon Sir Lynden Pindling and our first Ambassador to the UN L.B. Johnson.
On that day, the father of our nation committed the nation to working within the multi-lateral context. That remains the guiding principle today.
Today I pay tribute to all those who helped and help to establish, build and maintain our foreign relations. Thank you for a job well done.
Today, I also have the honour of formally announcing The Bahamas begins its campaign to serve on the UN’s preeminent council: the Security Council for the term 2032 and 2033. The election takes place in 2031. We have the support of other Caricom countries.
I hope that we can all join in this national commitment.
Thank you Madam Speaker
