Commonwealth Day with a Hybrid Ceremony

In observance of Commonwealth Day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs observed the annual event with a hybrid ceremony held at the Ministry’s headquarters at the Goodman’s Bay Corporate Centre.
In conjunction with other international members, this year’s theme, “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming,” seeks to highlight the means by which the Commonwealth’s 54 member-states are ‘innovating, connecting and transforming’ to accomplish goals of protecting natural resources and boosting trade regionally and globally.
Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Alfred Sears, QC, MP, commenced today’s ceremony with his message giving assurance to the ongoing commitment of the Government of The Bahamas to working together with other member countries in achieving the fundamental goals of the Commonwealth.
Stating that “No man is an island unto himself,” Minister Sears reminded those in attendance of the importance of working with others to increase the success of initiatives in areas of youth development, educational opportunities, economic diversification, and overall improvement in the quality of living for all Bahamians.
Other references were made to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on member-states and the need for the digitization of services throughout the Commonwealth.
Minister Sears concluded on The Bahamas’ commitment to the shared values of the Commonwealth, noting the recent “implementation of policies to include digital currencies, the digitization of government services, ongoing projects to increase the ease of doing business, conducting activities for the protection of the country’s environment and natural resources, and other activities which ensure that the Government hears and responds to the voices of youth, women and girls, persons with disability, and other groups susceptible to vulnerability”.
Remarks were also delivered by H.E. Sarah Dickson, British High Commissioner, Ms. Sandena Neely, Director of Youth, and Mr. Rashard Ritchie, Youth Representative, the ceremony was also virtually attended by High Schools throughout The Bahamas, Youth Representatives and Organisations, and the Ministry staff at home and abroad.
