Press Statement from The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Bahamas’ Joint Effort with French-Mexican Initiative to Restrain Mass Atrocities

Today, 21 September 2026, The Bahamas Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister, the Honourable Fred Mitchell, in attendance at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, New York, USA, announced that The Bahamas has officially joined the French-Mexican Initiative on restraint in the use of the veto in cases of mass atrocities. This critical announcement by Minister Mitchell came during a ministerial meeting with his colleagues; the Foreign Ministers of France and Mexico seen in photo today, 21 September 2026 at UNGA 81.

The UK’ Foreign Secretary Ed Milliband and The government of Guyana also announced they had joined the initiative with some 126 countries of the United Nations now a part of it.
