PRIME MINISTER CONGRATULATES OUTSTANDING OFFICERS
FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FOREIGN SERVICE

During Diplomatic Week, the Rt. Hon. Perry G. Christie, Prime Minister of The Bahamas, congratulated outstanding officers for their contributions to the Foreign Service during the presentation of Foreign Service Medals at the Balmoral Club on Sanford Drive on Tuesday, October 18, 2016.

Noting that these individuals have also contributed to The Bahamas as a whole and to the building of our nation, the Prime Minister commended each one of them for having touched his own life over the years and for having played a role in his own development as a leader.

In accordance with Public Service Commission (Foreign Service Orders) Regulations, 2014, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs awards Foreign Service officers with Foreign Service medals such as the Lynden Pindling Medal for Leadership, Distinguished Foreign Service Medal, Paul Adderley Medal for Excellence, Clement Maynard Medal for Innovation, Janet Bostwick Medal for Women in the Foreign Service and Foreign Service Bravery Medal.

In 2014, the Ministry awarded Mrs. Marilyn Zonicle with the Distinguished Foreign Service Officer Medal; Mr. Andrew McKinney, B.E.M., with the Lynden Pindling Medal for Leadership (Service to GG or PM); Mrs. Sharon Brennen-Haylock, with the Paul L. Adderley Medal for Excellence; Mr. Carlton Wright, with the Clement Maynard Medal for Innovation; Dr. Patricia Rodgers, with the Janet Bostwick Medal for Women in the Foreign Service; and Sergeant Michelet Merunard, Foreign Service Bravery Medal.

During this year’s (2016) Diplomatic Week, the following individuals were bestowed honours:

·         Mrs. Mary T. Sweetnam, O.B.E, received the Janet Bostwick Medal for Women in the Foreign Service.  She has had dedicated and long service as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and as such has  helped to establish a firm foundation for the service.

·         Mr. Philip Miller received the Clement Maynard Medal for Innovation, for his tireless efforts to put in place the procedures for the modernisation of the Foreign Service, beginning with the Foreign Service Act of 2014 and the crafting of the Foreign Service Orders

·         Mr. Harcourt Turnquest, O.B.E, was awarded the Paul Adderley Medal for Excellence, for his long and distinguished service as Permanent Secretary and also as Ambassador to the United Nations and High Commissioner to Canada

·         H.E Ambassador A. Missouri Sherman-Peter, who also was awarded the Paul Adderley Medal for Excellence, was recognized for her contribution to the service as Consul General, NY, Deputy Permanent Representative at the UN Mission, High Commissioner to Canada and Permanent Secretary.  She has had numerous accomplishments in the international arena such as senior staff member of the Commonwealth, Chef de Cabinet of the 58th UNGA President and CARICOM Ambassador to the UN.

·         Reverend Dr. James Moultrie was another recipient of the Paul Adderley Medal for Excellence for his outstanding service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as Ambassador to the United Nations.  He continues to serve the Government as Chair of the Public Service Commission.

·         Mr. Selwyn Smith, Honorary Consul of The Bahamas in Barbados, and Mr. Facundo Barcardi, Honorary Consul of The Bahamas in Panama, were the recipients of the Distinguished Foreign Service Medal for their tireless efforts serving the interests of The Bahamas in Barbados and Panama for many years, often going above and beyond the call of duty.

Honorees have been given plaques until the medals have been designed and struck, after which they will be presented with their medals.

Prime Minister Christie also announced that an additional Foreign Service Award named in honour of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, the Hon. Frederick A. Mitchell. He commended Minister Mitchell on his outstanding work, statesmanship and innovation as Foreign Minister that have resulted in The Bahamas gaining recognition and high esteem in the global arena.
