Special Envoy of the Portuguese Republic Visits The Bahamas to Advance United Nations Security Council Candidacy
Nassau, The Bahamas – 4th June 2025 The Special Envoy of the Portuguese Republic Ambassador João Caetano da Silva, paid an official visit to The Bahamas as part of Portugal’s diplomatic outreach in support of its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the term 2027-2028.
During his visit, Ambassador da Silva held high-level consultations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where discussions reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties and shared priorities between Portugal and The Bahamas. Both nations expressed a deep commitment to multilateral cooperation, climate resilience, and the protection of the marine environment. The dialogue further highlighted the alignment of values and mutual interest in addressing pressing global challenges through international collaboration.
As part of the official itinerary, Ambassador da Siva visited Woodcock Primary School and King’s College in Nassau. These school visits provided an opportunity for meaningful engagement with students about diplomacy, international relations and The Bahamas’ own historic, inaugural candidacy for a seat on the United Nations Security Council for the term 2032-2033.
Ambassador da Silva also explored The Bahamas’ rich cultural and natural heritage through a guided tour of Clifton Heritage National Park. He also received insights from The Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation (BREEF) on ongoing efforts in marine conservation. The visit concluded with a refreshing dip in the sea.
Further strengthening the ties between Portugal and The Bahamas, the UN Portugal Digital Fellowship Programme on Digital Innovation and Transformation includes the participation of Bahamian national, Ms. Denise Clarke. The Programme empowers participants to design and implement inclusive, secure, and effective digital governance and transformation initiatives to enhance public service delivery.
Portugal’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council is anchored in a steadfast commitment to international peace and security, inclusive dialogue, and sustainable development. This commitment is encapsulated in the guiding principles of the campaign: Preventing conflict, Partnering with all, Protecting peace.
