Statement by Foreign Minister the Hon. Frederick A. Mitchell on the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights
10 December 2023
Today is a special day as it marks the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR). The theme for Human Rights Day 2023 is “Freedom, Equality and Justice for All”.
The UDHR was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948. It enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or national or social origin.
Much of the world, including The Bahamas, was still under the tutelage of colonialism in 1948. Now, more than ever, we need to renew the social contract and the vision of human rights-based development for our people.
