4th February, 2014

Nassau, New Providence, The Bahamas. The Government of The Bahamas sends condolences to the Government and the people of the Republic of Namibia and to the family of HE Hage Gottfried Geingob, who served as Namibia’s first Prime Minister, third President, and leader of the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) from 2017 to 2024.

His leadership and actions led to the political recognition of SWAPO before Namibia’s independence in 1990. As a representative of SWAPO pre-independence, he attended the United Nations General Assembly sessions from 1965 to 1985. He participated in the Non-Aligned Movement conference in Georgetown, Guyana, with guest status in 1972.

The Foreign Minister stated that President Geingob will be remembered as a strong proponent of social democratic values and recognition and reconciliation between diverse groups, not only in Namibia but also in Southern Africa and the rest of the Global South.
