THE BAHAMAS AND THE 4TH CYCLE OF THE UPR- CIVIL SOCIETY SUBMISSIONS

THE BAHAMAS AND THE 4TH CYCLE OF THE UPR- CIVIL SOCIETY SUBMISSIONS

The Bahamas is tentatively scheduled to participate in the Fourth Cycle of the Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review (UPR) from April to May 2023. Through the UPR, the Human Rights Council (HRC) will review the fulfillment by The Bahamas of its human rights obligations and commitments. It is general practice in The Bahamas that a committee prepares periodic human rights review reports. During the process, the local Civil Society is engaged including at times incorporation into the coordinating body.

Reviews are based on: (a) national reports prepared by the States under review; (b) a compilation of United Nations (UN) information on the States; and (c) a summary of information submitted by other stakeholders (including civil society actors and national human rights institutions (NHRIs)) also prepared by UN Office for Human Rights.

Civil society actors can submit written information for the report, which is considered during the review. Accredited stakeholders can attend and observe the session of the UPR Working Group. They can also attend and make oral statements during the regular sessions of the Human Rights Council when the outcomes of the State reviews are considered.

To submit written submissions stakeholders are required to follow the technical guidelines for stakeholders’ submissions for the 4th cycle issued by the OHCHR and submit by the deadline through the “On-line UPR submissions registration system”. The tentative deadline for submissions by other stakeholders is 29 September, 2022.

The mentioned technical guidance is available on the following link: StakeholdersTechnicalGuidelines4thCycle_EN.pdf (ohchr.org). The Guidelines for the Use of the On-Line UPR Submissions Registration System” is available at How-to-GuideUPR_Online_Registration_System.doc (live.com).
The UN will not consider late submissions. Organisations encountering technical problems using the online system are urged to contact the UPR Submissions Helpdesk through the following email address: ohchr-uprsubmissions@un.org.
