Kampala, Uganda – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to announce the signing of a communiqué formalizing diplomatic relations between the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Republic of Benin in the margins of the third South-South Summit (G77 + China). The communiqué was signed by the Foreign Ministers of both countries, namely, the Honourable Fredrick Mitchell of The Bahamas and the Honourable Olushegun Adjadi Bakari of Benin.

Benin has recently expanded its relations with the African diaspora, with The Bahamas becoming the seventh CARICOM country with which it has initiated diplomatic relations. Minister Mitchell hailed this step as key in achieving closer cooperation and collaboration between the two nations, who already share a profound historical and cultural bond rooted in the transatlantic slave trade. More recently, both countries have come together to support the MSSM in Haiti. The Government of The Bahamas is committed to strengthening ties with Sub-Saharan African states, in addition to bolstering South-South cooperation.
