The Bahamas Formalizes Diplomatic Relations With the Solomon Islands

New York, 19 March 2024 – Ambassador Stan Smith, Permanent Representative of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to the United Nations, and Ambassador Jane Waetara, Permanent Representative of Solomon Islands to the United Nations, signed a Joint Communique to formalize diplomatic relations on behalf of their respective governments. The signing ceremony took place at the Permanent Mission of The Bahamas to the United Nations in New York on Friday, 15 March 2024.

This diplomatic agreement signifies the strong commitment to enhance cooperation between the two countries, as they both share commonalities as small island developing states (SIDS) vulnerable to climate change. Given their shared values, this agreement acts as a catalyst for strengthening bilateral engagement in the areas of climate resilience, climate adaptation, and environmental preservation.

Notwithstanding the enhanced cooperation that will stem from this agreement, both countries have supported each other in multilateral platforms like the United Nations and through the Commonwealth Group of Countries, South-South Cooperation, the Organization of the African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), among others.

Through this newly formed alliance, both The Bahamas and Solomon Islands can further foster mutual understanding and continue to collaborate on shared objectives within international and domestic spaces in solidarity.

During the official ceremony formalizing diplomatic relations, both ambassadors of The Bahamas and Solomon Islands expressed their interest in strengthening ties and seeking to enhance cooperation between their respective countries.
