The Bahamas Welcomes IHO Officials for Assessment

7th October 2025, Nassau, New Providence, The Bahamas. Upon The Bahamas’ recent accession to The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) in May of this year, the IHO conducted a technical assessment in Nassau during the week of September 29th to October 3rd 2025.

IHO representatives, Mr. Koen Vanstaen and Mr. Robert Wheeler, visited several agencies, including The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, the Bahamas National Geographic Information Systems (BNGIS) Centre, the Attorney General’s Office and Ministry of Legal Affairs, the Bahamas Maritime Authority, the Port Department, the Department of Marine Resources, the Department of Meteorology and the Department of Environmental Planning and Protection.

The technical assessment addressed the status of hydrographic surveying, nautical charting and maritime safety information (MSI). It also identified key areas for development and highlighted priorities, which will greatly assist in determining the way forward as the country remains committed to strengthening its hydrographic capabilities for a safe, secure, and environmentally sustainable maritime industry.
