THE COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS AND THE REPUBLIC OF CHAD ESTABLISH DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

New York, New York, United States— On Thursday, 16 July 2026, the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Republic of Chad formally established diplomatic relations by signing a Joint Communiqué, in accordance with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and international law.
The Joint Communiqué was signed for The Bahamas by His Excellency Stan O. Smith, Permanent Representative of The Bahamas to the United Nations in New York, and for the Republic of Chad by His Excellency Mouctar Abakar, Permanent Representative of Republic of Chad to the United Nations.
Both representatives also expressed readiness to pursue cooperation in areas of mutual benefit, including diplomacy, sustainable development, trade and investment, climate resilience, education, and technical cooperation, while reaffirming their commitment to advancing shared priorities through regional and international fora.
The Bahamas expressed sincere appreciation for Chad’s contribution to the United Nations-backed Gang Suppression Force (GSF) in Haiti, acknowledging its support for regional peace and security and its solidarity with the Haitian people amid ongoing security challenges. This shared commitment further strengthens the foundation for the newly established relationship.
This milestone reflects a shared commitment to friendly relations, mutual respect, sovereign equality, and cooperation in areas of common interest. It also underscores The Bahamas’ continued effort to deepen engagement with African nations and the diaspora through enhanced dialogue and bilateral and multilateral collaboration.
