Travel Advisory for Venezuela
19 June 2025 BOLIVARIAN REPUBLIC OF VENEZUELA – TRAVEL ADVISORY
SUMMARY
Avoid travel to Venezuela. This advisory contains important information regarding the current security situation in Venezuela and advice for Bahamians in and around the country. Bahamians are currently advised not to travel to Venezuela under any circumstances. The Ministry encourages all Bahamians who are travelling or living abroad to register here. If you are in urgent need of consular assistance, please email consularcrisis@bahamas.gov.bs.
SECURITY ALERT
Venezuela is currently undergoing significant levels of violent crime, unstable political and economic situations, a decline in basic living conditions, including shortages of medication, gasoline and water, and risk of arbitrary detention. Criminal gangs operate openly and with little repercussion, often setting up fake police checkpoints. Armed robberies, including with grenades and assault rifles, take place throughout the country, including in tourist areas and institutions such as banks and ATMs, parks, shopping malls, public transportation stations, and universities.
Since 2024, dozens of foreign citizens have been arbitrarily detained by the Venezuelan authorities. We may not be notified if you are detained in Venezuela.
It is also recommended to stay away from any political demonstrations or gatherings and to keep informed of the political and security situation. Similarly, it is recommended to refrain from any comments on the Venezuelan political situation while in the country.
DEMONSTRATIONS
Large-scale and violent demonstrations frequently occur in Caracas and other areas across the country. They have resulted in many arrests, including of foreign reporters, injuries and deaths in the past.
There is currently an increased chance of demonstrations and protests. These may become violent and could be dispersed using force (the use of rubber bullets and tear gas). Avoid political rallies, demonstrations and crowds, and do not cross security-force lines or barricades.
ADVICE TO BAHAMIANS IN VENEZUELA, GUYANA, COLOMBIA AND BRAZIL
Bahamians who are presently in Venezuela or any of the surrounding states, are advised to:
- Exercise caution at all times.
- Monitor local media for the latest information.
- Follow instructions from local authorities and security forces.
There is a large military presence along the border. There is a risk of extortion and kidnapping, particularly in the area within 20 km of the border with Colombia.
Smuggling and drug trafficking occur along the border with Brazil.
TRAVEL BY AIR TRAVEL
Flights between Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Peru have been suspended. Contact your airline or travel agent/tour operator if your flight is affected.
Be especially vigilant around Maiquetia Airport (Caracas) as this is a known hotspot for criminal activity, from low-level pickpocketing to armed robberies. You could be targeted at the arrival or departure terminals, at the airport’s car park and during travel to or from the airport.
TRAVEL BY SEA TRAVEL
Exercise increase caution as there have been incidents of piracy and armed robbery in and around Venezuela’s waters, especially east of Puerto La Cruz and in waters between Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela and Guyana.
