UN Group on Arbitrary Detention Concludes Bahamas Visit

📷: The Human Rights and Human Security Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hosted a press conference and dialogue with the WGAD with representatives from the Office of the Attorney and the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Security, and representatives from six other government agencies and departments, some of whom joined virtually.

Today,  the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) concluded its country visit to The Bahamas. This visit provided the WGAD an opportunity to engage directly with the executive, judicial, and legislative branches of government and representatives of civil society and detainees. The WGAD’s mandate is to understand the situation prevailing in The Bahamas, and the underlying reasons for instances of arbitrary deprivation of liberty or best practices preventing arbitrary detention from occurring. The WGAD was invited to visit The Bahamas in 2017 based on an invitation received from the Government. Stakeholders welcomed the preliminary report and look forward to continuing the constructive dialogue over the course of the next year.
