Bahamas United Nations Day 2022 Letter
The United Nations Charter came into effect on this day 77 years ago. Coming off the heels of the 2nd World War, a global conflict that saw the loss of over 40 million lives. The Charter states that the UN was founded to prevent war and bring peace through international cooperation while assuring the sovereignty and equality of all member-states.
Since joining the UN upon gaining our independence in 1973, The Bahamas has embodied the principles of the organisation, becoming an active and enthusiastic participant in many international initiatives that address global issues faced by countries like ours, including food security, climate change and human rights.
This Year’s UN Day theme, “Nourishing Peace,” is especially poignant today, given the conflicts and the threat of conflicts occurring worldwide. Warfare and the instability it creates undoubtedly have a devastating impact with long-lasting effects on developing nations like The Bahamas, drastically imperilling already fragile economies, endangering long-term stability and negatively impacting the overall quality of life. Conflicts have no winners.
The Bahamas remains as committed today to the ideals encapsulated in this year’s theme of Nourishing Peace, as it was when we joined the United Nations in 1973. Therefore, we call for the promotion of peace, be it in our country, our region, or anywhere else in the world. Our active participation in the many initiatives undertaken by the United Nations over the past 49 years has demonstrably proven our nation’s willingness to be a champion for global peace and stability, despite our small size.
Today we urge everyone to nourish peace in every aspect of their life, whether at home, professionally or among their peer group. Substituting belligerence for dialogue, cooperation and understanding creates a more prosperous, stable and happy world.
