The Bahamas Issues Updated Travel Advisory for Iran

22 June 2025 IRAN – TRAVEL ADVISORY

SUMMARY

Avoid all travel to Iran. This advisory contains important information regarding the current security situation in Iran. Due to the increased risk of regional military escalation and the risk of unexpected closure of Iranian airspace and airports, Bahamians are advised not travel to Iran under any circumstances. The Ministry encourages all Bahamians who are travelling or living abroad to register here. If you are in urgent need of consular assistance, please email consularcrisis@bahamas.gov.bs.

SECURITY ALERT

There are ongoing hostilities between Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Drones, bombs, missiles and other projectiles have struck targets in Iran (military and nuclear installations). Further attacks are likely to occur. Travelling to Iran involves high risks of terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, arbitrary arrest and wrongful detention.

TERRORISM

Iran is the target of terrorist acts on its territory by organizations that have demonstrated their capacity for action and their determination to continue their attacks. Attacks have targeted foreign interests, Iranian military and government establishments, tourist attractions and popular public places, nightclubs and entertainment venues, public transportation, and airports.

ADVICE TO BAHAMIANS IN IRAN AND BORDERING COUNTRIES

The border areas of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are usually involved in kidnappings (where foreign nationals have been targeted) and affected by ethnic conflicts. The borders with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are open only to citizens of those countries.

Foreigners travelling in the vicinity of these sensitive borders often attract the attention of local security forces, which can result in short periods of detention. Bahamians who are presently in Iran or any of the surrounding states, are advised to:

● monitor local media to stay informed of the rapidly evolving situation

● follow the instructions of local authorities, including air-raid sirens and evacuation or shelter in place orders, which can be updated at short or no notice

● identify the location of the closest bomb shelter

● shelter in a hardened structure when air raid warning sirens are active

● move away immediately and contact local authorities if you encounter an unexploded ordnance, military debris or fragments, or any suspicious object

● ensure that your travel documents and those of your family are up to date

● Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place

TRAVEL BY LAND

If you have a valid Bahamian passport, wish to leave Iran and can do so safely, note the following border crossing options:

– To Türkiye (e-visa required):

  • Qator/Kapıköy
  • Bazargan/Gürbulak
  • Sero/Esendere

– To Armenia (e-visa required)

– Nordoz/Agarak

– To Turkmenistan (special permission required)

TRAVEL BY AIR TRAVEL

Flights to and from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Airport have been suspended. Immense caution remains due to unpredicted flight closures and restrictions.

TRAVEL BY SEA

Iran and the United Arab Emirates both claim sovereignty over the islands in the Gulf and the military patrols the waters. Exercise caution if travelling by sea, particularly around the disputed islands of Abu Musa and Tunb. Travel by sea is not recommended unless this is the only route available for evacuation.
