Bahamas Congratulates and will work closely with Amb. Peter Thomson of Fiji, President-elect of the 71st UN General Assembly

The Bahamas joins others in congratulating Ambassador Peter Thomson, the Permanent Representative of Fiji, who was elected as President of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Amb. Thomson’s vast experience and diplomatic skills at the United Nations will certainly serve him well as he steers the work of the General Assembly, in its first meeting since the historic adoption of the new development goals, Agenda 2030, and the landmark Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

His work on the preservation and protection of Oceans and Marine resources is particularly well known. The Bahamas, is especially pleased that Amb. Thomson will in this role, bring the perspective of a small island developing states like The Bahamas and help to heighten awareness and sensitivity to the issues confronted by such states. Amb. Dr. Elliston Rahming, the Permanent Representative of The Bahamas to the UN, was also elected as Vice-President of the Assembly and will work closely with Amb. Thomson during the one year of his Presidency.

The 71st Session will commence its work later this year in September.
