Geneva, Switzerland, Palais des Nations. Senator the Hon. L. Ryan Pinder, K.C., Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs, is leading the delegation of The Bahamas to the High-Level Event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, taking place this week in Geneva, Switzerland.

Among the commemorative events in which The Bahamas is participating, the Attorney-General joined some 140 State representatives in delivering national pledges to advance the principles and objectives of the Universal Declaration, a Declaration born out of the devastation of World War II. The Bahamas’ pledges, as delivered by Attorney-General Pinder, focused on four main themes: (1) the strengthening and development of national human rights mechanisms and institutions in alignment with international standards, including the establishment of the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee, the Office of the Ombudsman and strengthening the National Reporting Cooperation Mechanism; (2) Strengthening cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) as host country for the proposed regional office of OHCHR for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM); (3) Ensuring equality in nationality rights and (4) taking concrete measures to address the existential threat of climate change and its adverse effect on human rights.

The Attorney-General will also engage in several bilateral meetings and discussions in the margins of the High-Level Event and, on 12 December 2023, will serve as a panelist on a High-Level roundtable under the theme “The Future of Human Rights, Environment and Climate” along with several Heads of State and Government and other high-level dignitaries.
